"The Tanneries of Ancient Rome, an international heritage" is the theme of a meeting organised by UNIC to be held in Bologna Fair district (Centro Servizi, block D, Sala Notturno, at 12.00) on April 22, the opening day of LINEAPELLE, the leading exhibition in the leather sector.

Tanning is a very ancient craft, as testified by findings everywhere in the world, but it reached unparalleled quality levels in Italy. The same quality levels are offered today by the tanners who exhibit at LINEAPELLE.

UNIC is an association which has represented the Italian tanners at all levels since 1946. The conference in Bologna is aimed at illustrating the archaeological findings of some tanning workshops dating to the times of Ancient Rome. In fact, Pompei, Milan and Rome feature some sites of great historical and industrial importance, which bear witness to a great era for this craft in Roman civilization, when tanners and leather manufacturers started to join and form corporations, with their own regulations and statutes of conduct and acknowledgement.

Unic recently signed a convention with the Special Superintendant for the Archaeological Heritage of Naples and Pompei to sponsor the restoration of a tanning site discovered between 1873-1874 in the neighbourhood of Porta Stabia and eventually brought to light by Amedeo Maiuri in the 1950s.

Speakers at the conference will be architect Ms. Paola Rispoli from the Special Superintendant for the Archaeological Heritage of Naples and Pompei and head of the restoration project; Mr. Jean-Pierre Brun, the director of Jean Berard Centre in Naples and an expert of ancient crafts; archaeologist Mr. Stefano Musco and Ms. Angela Caspio from the Archaeological Superintendant of Rome; and Mr. Bruno Cortese from the Italian Association of Leather Chemists.

The Chairman of the conference will be the writer and journalist Mr. Alberto Angela, who will lead the audience through a journey into daily life in an ancient Roman town, including the issues linked to work and employment.
